To get the best results you have to have a few skills. Knowledge about what you are doing. Focusing and executing a strategy and developping new techniques to ensure that the focused target can be reached even if there are obstacles which should not be there. Working together with other partners and departments to reach the best results together. And knowing all the details, to ensure that you can decide fast and correctly. Be innovative and inspire your team.
These are a lot of skills and in some parts you will be good, in others you have to learn.
To ensure that your team trusts you and supports you even something goes wrong you have to stick to one principle. LEAD and FOLLOW. Work together and use the best skills of your team, partners or members of other departments. Hear and learn and FOLLOW these experts if they have special skills - in most cases better than your skills. If they trust you, you will get the right decisions. This means a lot of discussions and the risk to do something you don´t know best. If you can ask the right questions you can handle this and you will judging right. At the end you will have to decide. This will happen with the support of your team.
You will setup the strategy, you have to challenge your team or partners and if you LEAD you will set the pace and the targets and you will focus on executing all necessary steps. Your team small or large will FOLLOW you, if you can explain it, which will be easer, if it was involved in the defining phase.
So you have to have one essential skill which you have to develop: when it is time to FOLLOW and when you have to LEAD and when is best time of switching. Stick to that and you will have success.
